Verbal GMAT Prep

The Verbal Section of the GMAT Test is one of the four parameters that assess an applicant’s potential and capability. It is very important to score well in the Verbal Section to accomplish an overall higher GMAT Test score.

The three types of questions you will find in this section are:

  • Reading Comprehension (4 passages with 3-4 Questions each)
  • Critical Reasoning (14-15 Questions)
  • Sentence Correction (14-15 of Questions)

Any kind of questions, related to the verbal theme will fall into one of the above-mentioned categories. There will be a total of 41 multiple-choice questions and you will need to complete all of them in 75 minutes flat. Please remember TIMING is a very very important aspect of the test. Along with some basic grammatical concepts to answer the questions, you will need the following as a part of the verbal preparation:

  • Basic Sentence Structure: Nouns, Pronouns, and Adjectives. You need to be proficient in the fundamental grammatical concepts that shall help you in solving advanced questions from this topic.
  • Verbal Tense: Extensive practice on the usage of verbs and their tenses is needed so that you do not get confused between seemingly similar options.
  • Idioms & Idiomatic Expressions: Irrespective of whether English is your first language or not, the use of idioms and idiomatic expressions can be quite confusing.   • Pronoun Agreement: Having a thorough knowledge of the complex Pronoun Agreement Rules is only possible when you first master the fundamentals of Noun, Pronoun, Verb, and Adjective Application.
  • Subject-Verb Agreement: Once again, having a strong grip on the basic rules of grammar will help you solve the questions under this subtopic. You can improve your skills by attempting all of the GMAT Practice Exercises and Practice Tests.
  • Modifiers and Parallelism: Your ability to use the modifiers will be tested in the GMAT test. Therefore, you should know where the modifier should stand in the sentence precisely. Questions related to the Parallelism are seen in the Sentence Correction and these are the most frequently tested error types in the GMAT Sentence Correction questions.
  • Vocabulary: You will need a good vocabulary to do well in the Reading Comprehension section which is only possible through regular extensive reading of newspapers (particularly the editorial section), journals, magazines, etc. Spend a good time reading regularly to increase your speed and attention to details.

To ace this Verbal Section, focus your attention towards carefully deciphering the question and have a strong grasp on the basic grammatical concepts and gist of the question. For instance, in the Reading Comprehension section, you will have to improve your skill of understanding the complex language or structure to separate out the relevant matter from the extra information. In Critical Reasoning, grasp the key idea and sort out the useful information; read through the options and analyse logically. The Sentence Correction problems can be answered correctly only if you are familiar with the fundamental rules of grammar.
