Whenever you visit University Websites it is very clear that there is a lot of diversity among the current students, and in fact the Universities also expect diversity (people with different Education, Geography, Work Experience, Cultural backgrounds). But this does not mean that International Students shall have any added admissions advantage.
Increasing Number of International Applicants:
It is common for Universities in Countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Australia etc to receive a great number of International Applicants every year. As per the recent data, USA accepts over 74,000 International Applicants and these numbers are increasing every year at a positive rate, as 63% US Colleges report a surge in applications for the Year 2022-2023, as compared to 43% in Year 2021-2022 and 22% in Year 2020-2021.
Admission Criteria:
It is usually the case that International Students have to tick a lot of boxes that their other counterparts do not. They also have to meet a Minimum Score for English Proficiency Test like TOEFL / IELTS.
Possible Disadvantage in Extracurriculars:
As the Education System differs from Country to Country, the rate of participation in extra-curriculars for applicants ranges a wide spectrum. Universities prefer applicants with a greater level experience / exposure in extracurriculars as they make for a well-rounded, holistic student body. So, applicants with lower extracurricular participation / opportunities may face a disadvantage here.
Expensive Tuition Fee & Higher Cost of Living:
In most Universities, the tuition costs for International Students are much higher than their other counterparts. This might pose a problem if Financial Aid / Scholarship, when needed, is not found. Merit based scholarship might provide some help if the accepted students are able to qualify to receive it.
Bottom Line
While your Nationality might not be an advantage during your selection process, it should not be a factor for the admissions committee to reject your application. What matters the most is the strength and uniqueness of your application along with your EA Test Scores, Academic Credentials, Work Experience, Letters of Recommendation, Essays etc.
